How this works

Usable range uses the same speed, temperature and load factors as the range calculator. The planner drives from your starting charge down to your minimum, then stops at the last town on the route before that point and charges to your chosen level. Charging times are rough: fast-charge speed varies a lot between models and drops on a cold battery, so check your car's charging curve and the charger's status before you leave.

Questions

How many charging stops does an EV need from Ottawa to Toronto?

It depends on the car and the weather. Pick your model and temperature above: many long-range EVs make it with no stop in summer, while most need one in deep cold.

Why charge to 80% instead of 100% on a road trip?

Fast charging slows down sharply above about 80%, so short stops to 80% usually get you there sooner than long stops to 100%.

How long does a fast-charging stop take?

Often 20 to 40 minutes from 10% to 80%, depending on the car and charger. Expect longer on a cold battery unless the car preconditions it on the way.
